Carter crouched down to shake John’s hand. “Oh, hello John. Nice to meet you. You’re right about the tea.” She said, ruffling his hair a bit. “What a sweetheart.” She mused, looking up at Steel. “Hello, Jude. That’s a lovely name you’ve got. Very unique.”
However, she quickly returned her attention back to Steel. “God, you look fantastic. And this is coming from someone who people pay to take photos of. What are you doing in town? I’m stranded because my car crashed and oh God it’s a huge fuc—freaking mess.” She said with a pointed little grin, doing her signature rambling.
“I’m not a sweetheart.” John said stubbornly, pouting slightly and crossing his arms. “I’m seven years old already. Let’s face it- I’m practically an old man by now.”
Jude nodded his head, looking at the ground and kicking a stray pebble. “It’s from the Beatles song.. y’know, Hey Jude.”
“Thank you.” Steel said, cheeks slightly pink from the compliment. “You look great, by the way. You really grew up.” She added. “We’re here to visit. Scott finally got a break from all of the interviews and singing and whatnot, so I decided that the kids should see where I grew up.”
Carter beamed brightly, the childhood admiration that she had always had for Steel coming back. “God, you look fantastic! I saw you in that one magazine spread the other day, but—wow.” She said, her smile becoming more relaxed.
“Are these your kids?” She inquired, looking at the children curiously. She didn’t have children of her own yet, but she always tried to be loving. However, this tended to backfire as most kids found Carter about as interesting as a stump of wood.
Steel laughed lightly, looking down and brushed a strand of hair behind her ear before looking back at Carter. “Thanks.” She said, smiling brightly. “Oh, you did? Gosh, I’m still not used to it.. you know, the fame from Scott.” She chuckled. Steel looked over at her children; Jude was giving Carter and inquisitive stare, something he usually did. John was blinking, listening intently to the conversation.
“I’m John D’Marco.” John said, thrusting out his hand towards Carter. The seven year old paused, then continued, “I was named after John Lennon. I met him, too, when my dad met him. He’s swell, really.” John pursed his lips slightly, looking around. “This place needs more tea.”
“I’m Jude.” Jude finally spoke, but Steel knew she wasn’t going to get much more out of the fifteen year old.
Carter sighed, looking around for a cup of coffee. The mechanics had told her that she was stuck in town for a few days, at least. This miserable realization, paired with the fact that she would miss the trip to New York was putting her in a horrid mood.
So, upon seeing an elegantly dressed woman in front of her, she rolled her eyes at the pure gaudiness of it. That is, until realized who the woman was—
“Steel.” Carter said aloud, sounding more like she was shocked than wanting the other woman’s attention.
“I don’t think you understand, mum. There’s a serious problem with the lack of shipyards in this place.”
Steel raised her eyebrows in question before shaking her head, deciding it wasn’t smart to argue with Jude. He was always right, whether you proved him wrong or you didn’t.
“Mum, people talk strange.” John added as he looked around. His hand was in Steel’s, who was looking around.
When Steel heard her name, she automatically looked up and turned to face where she heard it coming from. “Carter.” She said after a moment because she barely recognized her. She’d grown, that was for sure. She wasn’t the small and kiddish looking girl from before.
